Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

The disorder is a reaction to overwhelmingly traumatic events.

Causes: A traumatic or overwhelming event such as military combat, rape, and natural or man-made disaster.

Signs and symptoms: Signs of anxiety, hyperarousal, or stress; recurring dreams or flashbacks, which may be accompanied by dissociative reactions; explosive anger; increased substance abuse; sleep disturbances; difficulty concentrating; avoidance of activities surrounding the event; and feelings of guilt.

Interventions: Assess suicidal/homicidal ideations; assess anxiety levels; provide therapeutic listening; avoid judgment; and provide referrals for group or individual counseling.
